FACIAL ESTHETICS – PLANNING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
FOR THE AGEING FACE
The primary goal for most orthodontic patients is to improve dental esthetics. The orthodontist’s goal is to improve function and esthetics. Unfortunately when we improve function it is possible to compromise facial esthetics, especially in the ageing face. A good understanding of facial attractiveness, growth and the ageing face can help us in determining where to place teeth. A Class I occlusion may be most esthetic for individuals with ideal jaw relationships and perfectly proportional teeth but may not be the most esthetic choice in less ideal situations. Understanding how faces age allows us to optimize esthetics not just for the teenage years but well into the later years.

Dr. Taylor and Dr. Shamloo are partners in an orthodontic practice in Coquitlam. Dr. Taylor graduated from UBC dentistry in 1982 and completed herorthodontics training in Toronto in 1989. Her special interest is facial esthetics and the evolutionary reasons behind our esthetic preferences. Dr. Shamloo graduated from dentistry in 1997 from McGill and completed her orthodontic training in 2005 at Western Ontario. Her Master’s thesis involved a study of lip esthetics as influenced by an extraction or non-extraction treatment approach. Both Dr. Taylor and Dr. Shamloo share an almost obsessive interest in analyzing the facial esthetics of their patients and tabloid celebrities, which they feel complements their orthodontic practice.
